The mystery of Markelle Fultz started in 2017 when he was selected number one overall by the Philadelphia 76ers, but was shut down 4 games into the regular season with an apparent shoulder injury and a jump shot problem. The Sixers never announced officially what was wrong with his shoulder so it had left fans puzzled and concerned for the future. Fultz ended up returning later on in the season finishing the last 10 games, but the production still wasn’t there. Fultz ended the season playing 14 games, averaging 7.1 points and 3.8 assists in those games. Not what the Sixers expected from their number one pick.
The drama carried over into the 2018-2019 season where Fultz contributions to the team still isn’t where the organization needs it to be and his jump shot is continuing to have problems which shows in his inability to knock down shots. With the Sixers making a huge splash in trading for 4x All Star, Jimmy Butler, this team looks destined for greatness and Markelle is looking more and more like a liability. Butler has shown to be very animated and outspoken about his opinions on teammates and what he thinks is best for the organization (referring to his time in Minnesota), so one can only think about his concerns for Fultz’s struggle to contribute.
On Tuesday, Fultz’s agent informed the team that Markelle would not be participating in any games or practice until his shoulder would be examined by a specialist next week. The drama then took a unexpected turn when a source from Fultz’s camp leaked the information that Fultz would “prefer a fresh start with a new team.” Fultz’s agent informed ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski that Fultz has not requested a trade or spoken to anybody in the Sixers organization about a trade, so now the Sixers and their fans can do what they’ve been doing since 2017 when it comes in regard to Fultz, and that’s play the waiting game. With or without Markelle Fultz, this team isn’t going to slow down.
