According to Adrian Wojnarowski, Klay Thompson may look towards joining the Los Angeles Lakers this offseason if not offered a max contract.
Now the interest does come with some implications. The Lakers will have to acquire Anthony Davis this season which they only have until February 7th to accomplish.
With Davis demanding a trade earlier today, many suspected Davis, who is represented by Rich Paul who also represents LeBron James, may look to force his way to Los Angeles.
Davis and Paul are expected to make an announcement soon on Davis’ preferred destination being L.A. According to Wojnarowski, a trade to any other team will mean Davis will only be rental until he becomes a free agent in 2020.
Thompson’s contract is one of the many questions that Golden State has to answer this offseason.
Kevin Durant and DeMarcus Cousins are also impending free agents and are of top priority for Golden State. They should look to keep their talent from going to conference opponents. The departure of anyone from their starting lineup could spell the end of their dynasty.
Thompson could potentially fill a hole that comes about if a Davis trade is completed. The Lakers are in win-now mode with LeBron James approaching the end of his storied career.
Team President Magic Johnson and GM Rob Pelinka should do everything in their power to build the right team around James. Adding a skill two way player in Thompson will surely certify the Lakers place in the Western Conference.
